In general, there are two kinds of link methods. Over time Google and other search engines vet SEO’s work in these areas and cut out and/or ban sites who use non-approved methods. The watchword for today’s link building campaigns is quality, not quantity.
Links and Authority
Authority links help Google to decide how important your information is versus another website that is trying to present the same or similar information. It is a voting system. These links pass votes to your site; those votes help your site move up the rankings.
Links with useful traffic
The other kind of links are those that bring qualified traffic to your website, quite often this is where social media comes into it’s own as well placed links on Facebook or Twitter post might well bring you some relevant traffic to your website.
Some links can bring both authority and traffic, think of a well-written blog post for argument’s sake on a well-known blog with relevant readers to your recruitment niche/niches.
Examples of linking methods
Keep in mind you are looking for quality of the link, not quantity. 14 years ago you could buy 100-1000 links and be top ranked. Today those very same links will gain you a penalty and probably get you banned.
