Tip 6 of 31: Tell Search Engines Which Page Is the Original

Your website might be serving the same content under several different URLs without you knowing. Duplicate URLs are common, but they can make it harder for search engines to determine which version should represent the content.

 

The Problem

The same content can exist under multiple website addresses for reasons that have nothing to do with intentional duplication. Tracking parameters added by marketing campaigns create different URLs. Printer-friendly versions generate separate copies. Filters on category pages can produce dozens of identical or near-identical addresses. Technical settings may serve pages with and without www as if they are different documents.

 

What a Canonical Link Element Does

A canonical link element indicates which version of a duplicate or substantially similar page you prefer search engines to treat as the representative one.

Think of printing the same report under five slightly different filenames. A canonical link element is the label that says: “This is the main version. Use this one as the representative copy.”

It is a strong signal rather than a binding instruction. Search engines consider canonical elements alongside redirects, internal links, sitemaps and other signals, and may select a different canonical URL when those signals conflict.

When canonicalisation is implemented consistently, search engines can consolidate signals associated with duplicate or substantially similar URLs around one preferred page.

What to Do

Ask your developer to check that all important pages identify the correct canonical URL.

Verify that:

  • Pages with tracking parameters canonicalise to the appropriate clean URL
  • Duplicate or substantially similar filter pages point to the correct representative page
  • Canonical pages include a self-referencing canonical
  • Canonical elements use complete absolute URLs
  • HTTP and HTTPS versions resolve consistently
  • www and non-www versions resolve consistently
  • Internal links point to the preferred canonical URL
  • XML sitemaps contain the preferred canonical URLs
  • JavaScript does not replace or contradict the canonical element
  • Different canonicalisation methods do not point to conflicting URLs

Do not automatically canonicalise every filtered page to its main category. A filtered page that provides distinct and useful content may need to remain independently indexable. The canonical target should accurately represent the same or substantially similar content.

Where an unwanted duplicate URL should no longer remain available, a permanent redirect may be more appropriate than a canonical element. Your developer should choose the method that fits the purpose of the URL.
