Recruitment SEO Step 7: Block sites scraping/duplicating your job content.

Block sites scraping/duplicating your job content.

If you think SEO is about some words on your website, then think again. SEO starts with the very basics of the web.

If you only ever learn one thing about the web, it needs to be that search engines rank websites based on their website's trust and authority score first and then their content. Never more is this true than in areas of the web where there is massive competition for the rankings.

Recruitment searches account for 30% of all searches made in Google, so that is beyond massive, and if you let just anyone come and grab your content and use it, you are nine times out of time going to give your job content to websites with higher trust and authority than yours. In doing so, you have entered a swimming race with Olympic champions, with a block of flats tiled to your ankle and one arm tied behind your back.

Protecting your job content from scraping or duplication can be challenging, but there are several measures you can take to minimise the risk. Keep in mind that no method can guarantee 100% protection, but these strategies can make it more difficult for unauthorised parties to scrape or duplicate your content:

  1. IP blocking: Identify and block IP addresses associated with suspicious activity or excessive requests. Regularly monitor your server logs for unusual patterns and take action against IPs engaging in scraping behaviour.
  2. User-agent detection: Analyse user-agents in HTTP headers and block requests from user-agents commonly associated with scraping tools. This method is not foolproof, but its worth a go.
  3. Dynamic content loading: Load icontent dynamically using JavaScript. Scrapers that rely on simple HTML parsing may not capture dynamically loaded content, making it more challenging for them to duplicate your job listings.
  4. Legal action: If scraping is causing significant harm, consider exploring legal options. Consult with legal professionals to understand the legality of scraping in your jurisdiction and to determine the best course of action.
  5. Monitor for content misuse: Regularly search for instances of your job content on other websites. Tools like Google Alerts or specialised scraping detection services can help you identify unauthorised use of your content.
  6. Terms of Service (ToS): Clearly outline the terms of use for your website and explicitly state that scraping, duplicating, or reproducing your content without permission is prohibited. This can help in legal actions if necessary.

No solution is foolproof, and determined scrapers may find ways to bypass some of these measures. A combination of these strategies, along with vigilance and monitoring, can help minimise the risk of scraping and protect your job content.
